All Saints have to be one of the success stories of 1998. It was quite a year for them, with a string of number ones, and success in the States as well as here - they definitely did it their own way, but things didn't always go according to plan - as we've been finding out recently. The year started for them at The Brits - just like the Spice Girls a year before, they won both Best Single and Best Video. Although the hits kept coming thick and fast in the UK, they spent a large part of the year going back and forth to the States - and it paid off. "Right now it's still fairly new so we don't know what our response is. So far we've gone down quite well. We haven't been out here that much but just from the few times we've been here we've had a really good reception. So we can't wait for a lot more stuff to be released from us out here and see how people take us in." They did their bit for charity, they were regular supporters of Breast Cancer Awareness - Mel's mum used to have breast cancer - that's why the girls were so keen to lend their support: "We wanted to get involved with a charity and Breakthrough is very special for us because my mother has had breast cancer twice and it affects the whole family when it does happen and it's so very common. Basically we just need loads and loads of money to get some research and find out why it happens and how to stop it." Another charity date was with Prince Charles in Hyde Park in June, for the Prince's Trust. By this time, Mel from the band was already pregnant. She continued to perform as long as possible, despite the fact she was having to take it easy, due to a rare medical condition. Mel had a disease of the spine called Scoliosis when she was young - and still has three metal rods in her back. Nic and Nat said she'd had a tough time: "From what we've heard she's the first person with three metal rods in her back to be pregnant and have a baby in this country. She's going to have a caesarean, just for safety reasons as well, plus I don't think she wants to stretch anything". The girls say they're very proud of their bandmate: "Mel is just like a walking humpty-dumpty. She's SO big, the baby's bigger than her now! She's a real strong person - she's gone through a lot. Having the scoliosis and having the operation, learning how to walk again and doing what she did is so amazing. She's a tough cookie". Happily, of course, the birth was fine, and Mel is now the proud mum of baby Lily-Ella. The baby's father is Stuart Zender, who was in Jamiroquai. Nic and Nat also had high profile boyfriends - Robbie Williams and Jamie Theakson, and their on-off romances have provided the tabloids with headlines across the year. The girls say they never talk to the tabloid press - they don't want to add to the gossip that's already out there. And, of course the year ended with a good deal more speculation about their future. They've had a busy year.
All Saints' Nicole Appleton has finally spoken about the much-rumoured split between herself and the rest of the band. Last weekend, the press were full of stories of her walk-out from the group after the band failed to make their scheduled appearance at the 'Smash Hits Awards' at Wembley Stadium, last Sunday. In a statement released yesterday (21st), she said - "Following speculation in the media during the last week, I am going on record to tell all our fans that I am not leaving All Saints. I'm really looking forward to our 1999 UK tour and beginning work on our second album. Thanks to everyone who has supported us during the year. Lots of love, Nicole" A statement released by their publicist last Monday in response to the rumours indicated that the band were going to use the Christmas and New Year break to 'reflect'. The full statement, last Monday, read "1998 has been an amazing year for All Saints - so thanks to all the fans for their support, they have been fantastic. It has also been tiring and at times very pressurised. We have been living in each other's pockets and so the odd row has been inevitable. We are now all taking time to reflect. We're looking forward to some time off over Christmas to rest and recharge our batteries, ready to see all our fans on the 1999 tour. There will also be some new tracks which we are currently working on." All Saints are to embark on an extensive 20-date UK tour next April, culminating in a show at London's Wembley Arena on the 25th June.
Yesterday, All Saints were forced to release a statement concerning the future of the band after the weekend's rumours, fuelled by tabloid reports, that they had split up. The stories had been further given credence by the girls' last minute cancellation of their scheduled appearance at the 'Smash Hits Awards' show at London's Wembley Arena. The Sun newspaper reported that Nicole Appleton had left the band in an acrimonious walkout from her three band-mates which include her sister Natalie, Shaznay Lewis and Melanie Blatt. However, the official statement, whilst admitting that there had been the 'odd row', does not deny a split and merely hints that there is to be a 'cooling off' period over Christmas and the New Year to give the girls time to 'reflect'. They do though, make reference to their extensive UK tour in 1999 and to their second album which they are to begin recording in January. There is no doubt that a year of constant promotional tours and appearances, throughout the world, has taken its toll; Melanie Blatt has already made it quite clear that she wishes to spend a lot more time with her boyfriend, Stuart Zender, and their baby, Lily Ella, in the coming year. Nicole, also, wants to spend more time with her beau, Robbie Williams, as their constant separation during 1998 nearly caused a permanent break-up. The full statement reads as follows - "1998 has been an amazing year for All Saints - so thanks to all the fans for their support, they have been fantastic. It has also been tiring and at times very pressurised. We have been living in each other's pockets and so the odd row has been inevitable. We are now all taking time to reflect. We're looking forward to some time off over Christmas to rest and recharge our batteries, ready to see all our fans on the 1999 tour. There will also be some new tracks which we are currently working on."

It's a Girl for All Saints' Mel Blatt All Saints singer Melanie Blatt gave birth to her first child this morning in London, according to reports in the British press. The little girl-christened Lily Ella after the first flowers her father, Stuart Zender, presented to Blatt and jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald-arrived via Caesarean section, weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. Both mother and daughter are reported to be doing fine. After Lily's arrival, reports the BBC, mother Mel announced, "I'm completely thrilled; I'm over the moon. She's a very beautiful girl." Last week, the then very pregnant Blatt was notably absent when the rest of her band performed at Milan's MTV Europe Music Awards. Rumors abounded that Patti LaBelle would replace her onstage, but the diva never materialized. Lily's beaming papa, ex-Jamiroquai bassist Zender, was present for the birth. Zender made headlines recently after he announced his departure from the neo-soul tribe in order to tend to his new family. In a statement released at the time, the bassist noted that except for "fathering his soon-to-be-born child," his future plans were currently unknown.

All Saints, who had picked up the most amount of nominations, only took home one award - for Best Breakthrough act. The girls gave a show-stopping performance of their No.1 hit, Lady Marmalade, staging a saucy dance routine to their version of the 1970s funk classic, originally recorded by Patti Labelle. Patti had been rumoured to be the mystery special guest to replace heavily pregnant Melanie Blatt, who was absent last night. But the 'replacement' member failed to materialise and the girls performed as a trio. Nat and Nic from the band said despite only winning one award they enjoyed the show: "The parties, the performing on stage, the vibe was fantastic and watching the other acts, that was the best part". "Pras was on and he was great. He dived into the audience so that was cool".

All Saints singer Nicole Appleton is about to make her acting debut in a Mick Jagger movie called "Saving Grace." The BBC reports that there are also plans for the rest of her All Saints bandmates to get involved, too, by contributing music to the soundtrack. Appleton told the BBC her part was small and described the role as "innocent and laidback." She said the flick, which stars Jagger and is also produced by the Rolling Stone singer, is a small English film based on a true story set in Cornwall.
The SPICE GIRLS and ALL SAINTS are set to work together for the first time on a cover of the 70s disco classic "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" for a charity record. Sources say both girl groups will forget past disagreements because the single is for charity and it's a song they all love.
All Saints have told the Net they've asked Beck to work with them. The band, who recently announced details of their first major UK tour, have been talking about their hopes for the follow-up to their debut album, 'All Saints'. Natalie says they’re still waiting for word from Beck, who’s a very busy man: "There’s something that stands out, definitely. The originality, the humour - there’s something about it I really like". And Shaznay says the girls will be going into the studio very soon: "We’ll start doing like a block-out period of being in the studio. We didn’t really sit down and talk about the first album, so I don’t think we’ll do that for this one. We’ll just kind of go in and work with the people we wanna work with and have a really good vibe". The UK tour kicks off next April in Blackpool, winding up in London at the beginning of May 1999. Shaznay says she’s particularly looking forward to it: "I really, really can’t wait. Can’t wait to kind of sit down and put them all into place and know what we’re definitely doing ‘coz we’re really excited about touring". And Nat added: "Just to have people come that are OUR fans. We do shows all the time with other artists. It’ll be nice to just see a big crowd for us. Definitely like a highlight of all the work we’ve done".
